Learning about other drummers has been a huge influence on my own development and understanding of music. I hope that this blog helps you to develop you own knowledge and playing. It is only meant as an introduction to the players; go further by listening to their music, and go out and see as many drummers playing live as you can! I will add any events of particular interest to the news on the home page, so keep an eye out for things you can go to!

September 2010 | Taylor Hawkins

September 6, 2010
Where others failed, Taylor Hawkins succeeded; filling the drum seat for Dave Grohl's own band! The Foo Fighters stick man plays with an energy and creativity which is instantly recognisable, and is now branching out with his own band!

July 18, 2010
After rising to international stardom with the Police, Stewart Copeland largely rejected his pop music past to pursue a career as a composer, authoring a prolific series of film scores, operas, and ballets. May 2010 | Aaron Spears

June 7, 2010
Aaron Spears was brought to my attention by one of my students. He had been getting into 'gospel' drummers and been really impressed by the power, speed, feel and precision of Aaron's playing. As soon as I heard him I was too! The best way to see what we mean is to get over to Drummer World and watch the videos!

April 2010 | Papa Jo Jones

April 28, 2010
Jo Jones shifted the timekeeping role of the drums from the bass drum to the hi-hat cymbal, greatly influencing all swing and bop drummers. Buddy Rich and Louie Bellson were just two who learned from his light but forceful playing, as Jones swung the Count Basie Orchestra with just the right accents and sounds.

Feb 2010 | Abe Laboriel jr.

February 25, 2010
Abe Laboriel is one of my favorite drummers. His natural sense of rhythm and musicality has made him one of the most in demand players in the world, and he now plays for Paul McCartney! When a friend of mine asked him for some advice on playing he said "Play like half the audience are deaf, and the other half are blind". Watch and listen to him play... you'll see what he means!
